How can psychotherapy and counselling help me?
Psychotherapy and counselling are talking therapies.
Psychotherapy is a unique way of dealing with your difficulties - it is a space where you can talk freely without the pressure of wanting to upset others or take their advice. In this space we can attend to you with compassion. I won’t offer advice or tell you what to do, but we will have time and space to think together about what’s troubling you. Also some people want to work on their self development so that they can grow and overcome constraints.
For other people, problems might feel too silly to talk about, or that others people’s problems are much bigger than theirs. They don’t feel they deserve the time of a therapist. Sometimes people feel they can’t change anything by just talking about their problem, but speaking to a trained therapist can open up possibilities of new understanding. I may offer you strategies in short term work if this is helpful.
Often we are not aware of where our difficulties come from, but they influence your life every day. Talking through troubles can help open up your eyes. You’ll think about things differently. My approach is psychodynamic and Jungian informed and helps you think about how all of your life is connected.
Sessions are held online or in person, or there may be outdoors availability. The main focus of our sessions together is to offer you a space to explore what’s troubling you. This involves mainly you talking. The thought of this can be scary, but my clients tell me this is one of the most important times of their week. I may offer you strategies based on mindfulness, cognitive behavioural therapy, or dialectical behavioural therapy if these might be helpful.
I can offer counselling as a short term service or psychotherapy as a longer term commitment of several years. The talking therapy I offer encourages you to talk in depth about what’s troubling you and to think about where this comes from.
