Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose private counselling?
Talking to a trained psychotherapist or counsellor can be a huge relief. I’m qualified to Master’s level and have completed all requirements and qualifications with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy in order to practice. I am also registered with the UKCP. I have seen a broad range of clients of all ages in the NHS, public sector, and Higher Education.
You’ll not be a number in an anonymous service, and you’re not limited to a number of sessions. If my sessions are full I am sometimes able to refer you to a trusted colleague.
What happens if I decide to make contact?
You can ask any questions you like, with no obligation.
We will arrange an initial assessment consultation, this is online.
The assessment session allows us to meet and to find out about you, and to decide if we both want to continue working together.
It’s important that you feel comfortable in your therapy. If we’re both happy to commence therapy, we’ll review together at appropriate points. Be assured that I will not advise you to continue any longer than necessary.
What happens in counselling and psychotherapy?
We meet for 50 minute sessions at a regular time every week. I rarely offer fortnightly or monthly sessions to begin with, although there is sometimes availability for Single Session Therapy if you want help with a targeted problem.
Are you seeing clients face to face?
Yes, although all initial consultations take place online via zoom. I continue to offer an online option for clients who prefer this flexibility.
Can I bring someone else?
No. Individual psychotherapy and counselling is a private space and it’s really important that you feel like you can talk about anything you like. It’s not appropriate for other people or children to be in the room. This would be like someone listening to your private conversations.
What will happen at the assessment session?
I’ll ask you about why you’ve chosen to come to counselling, and about your current circumstances. I’ll also ask you about your history and background. I’ll request a phone number so that I have a means to contact you, and also a GP contact number. I’ll talk to you about confidentiality, and payment options. According with GDPR regulations, I will not pass your details onto anyone else. There will also be opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
What if I need to cancel an appointment or go on holiday?
I need at least 48 hours notice of cancellation. Usually an email is fine. If 48 hours notice is not given, the full fee is liable because your individual allocated time can’t be given to anyone else.
Why do you charge for cancelled sessions?
Charging allows me to deliver a fully ethical therapeutic service for you following BACP regulations and requirements. Your session time is yours alone and charging allows me to keep it open for you.
Why is it expensive?
I am an experienced qualified practitioner with a high level of training (level 7). I continue my training with a high number of CPD hours every year, and I registered with and have met the criteria for the UK’s leading counselling and psychotherapy bodies. I have also practised in a umber of settings and have a range of experience and insight from this.
How long will counselling or psychotherapy take?
This depends on your personal difficulties and how long you would like to commit to. Some people want to do in-depth work. Others find that they begin with a short commitment and then want to continue for longer, or they want a short commitment and that is enough.
Do you offer clinical supervision?
Yes, please contact me to discuss your requirements.
